Email agents no longer sell a faster client. They sell continuity with a past self. Fyxer, in a product note from July 2026, states the method without euphemism: to learn how someone writes, it reads the last three hundred messages in the sent folder. From that corpus it infers openings, degree of bluntness, recurring formulas. Superhuman places automatic drafts that match the voice of mail already sent on its Business tier. Other tools in the same season — Slashy, Shortwave, and the assistants layered on Gmail and Outlook — make the same promise with different memory: the thread, the CRM record, the meeting notes. The product is not better prose. It is statistical continuity sold as time saved.
Three hundred sent messages are not a body of work. They are a work corpus. They contain replies written in haste, phrases copied from earlier threads, concessions made to close the day. A model trained there does not learn judgment. It learns the average of the moments when judgment already gave way. It then returns that average as «your voice» — familiar enough to pass without friction. The risk is not the glaring error. It is the sentence that sounds right and was never decided.
This is a shift of one centimetre from a problem already visible in the inbox. When mail stops being read, the recipient is no longer necessarily the reader. Here the problem moves to the sender. It is no longer only the person who receives who may not read. It is the person who «writes» who may no longer pass through the moment in which a sentence, once sent, cannot be withdrawn without a trace. A spelling tool intervenes on a text that already exists. An agent trained on the sent folder produces the text in place of the decision. That decision was the real work of correspondence. Style was secondary. Courtesy was secondary. What mattered was accepting that a phrase, once gone, stayed gone.
The industrial answer to volume has been consistent. Microsoft’s Work Trend Index counted 117 emails a day for the average worker. Notion closed Notion Mail in June 2026 after finding that more than half of users managed mail without opening the inbox. The response was not «write less». It was «do not write yourself». Delegation looks efficient until the cost is named: responsibility moves to a point where it is no longer visible.
In the same season a minority does the opposite. The Sunday Letter Project asks for a letter to a stranger, Sunday after Sunday, without a profile and without a sent folder from which a model could learn. The point is not stationery nostalgia. It is that a voice without a prior corpus has to build itself. Hand that task to a model and the trick shows at once, because the other side is not a colleague who recognises the tone and lets it pass. It is someone who owes nothing. A letter to a stranger has no «how you usually sound». It has to stand on its own — the same discipline required when shared context disappears.
For One Reader the implication is narrow and practical. A text written for one person who does not share the project, the thread, or the office jargon cannot be improved by continuity with previous sent mail. Continuity is exactly what that text does not need. It needs a choice that has not yet been averaged. The draft that arrives before the writer is useful for triage. It is a poor substitute for the sentence that has to arrive whole to someone who was not there when it was thought.
The threshold is simple and does not require a subscription. Take a work email that an agent could have written. Rewrite it as if it had to reach someone who shares no project and owes no reply. If after two paragraphs the text is still the agent’s, the voice was not yours. It was only familiar enough not to disturb.
