The Medium of Attention

Why digital wellbeing depends less on screen time than on the kind of attention technology organizes.

· 5 min read · One Reader

The debate about digital wellbeing is often reduced to one question: how much time do we spend online? But duration alone cannot describe whether technology is helping us act with intention or simply carrying us from one stimulus to the next.

A 2026 study of 842 adults distinguishes between intentional and passive technology use. Intentional use was associated with stronger attentional control and greater psychological wellbeing. Passive use showed the opposite pattern, and these relationships remained significant even after overall screen time was taken into account.

Two people can spend the same amount of time with a device while having entirely different experiences. One may be writing a message with a clear purpose; another may be moving through an endless sequence of recommendations without deciding what to see next.

Passive technology use is often the default condition created by interfaces designed to remove decisions. Autoplay, notifications and infinite scroll make continuation easier than stopping. The user does not need to choose the next thing because the system has already prepared it.

Intentional use introduces friction. It requires a beginning, a purpose and, eventually, an ending. This is why a letter belongs to a different category of digital activity. It may take time, but its time has a direction. There is a person to address, something to say and a natural point at which the message is complete.

One Reader is a small experiment in this distinction. It does not ask people to disappear from the digital world. It gives them a contained practice inside it: write to one person, read one letter, answer when there is something worth answering.

The goal is not to become a perfect user. It is to recover the ability to enter a digital space for a reason and leave it without being pulled into everything else.
